Shell account providers

There are many people who provide free shell accounts to the public. Many more of them charge for them. If this is your first experience with using a shell account, you probably would like a free one to start with.
There are already existing website that list free shell providers, so I wont attempt to tackle that task here. Instead I Will point you to two very exceptional websites for finding a free shell provider:
Red-pill.eu and
Bylur.net
Both sites have very extensive lists and information on providers. However, I can reccomend these that I have used and reccomend:

Unixclan
Unixclan offers instant account creation, so for those of you who are ready to hop in, I reccomend this site. Note that on the front page is says in order to create an account, all you have to do is connect to unixclan.no-ip.org with username addme and password addme. Skip ahead to the tutorial on connecting to your shell if you are ready to get started with a unixclan shell account.

SilenceIsDefeat
Not exactly *free*, account creation requires a one time donation of 1 dollar USD. Well worth it, SilenceIsDefeat have a supportive community, fast servers and very little downtime. I use my shell account with them on a regular basis.

In the end, you should choose a provider that fits your needs. More features IS NOT necessarily better. For instance, some free shell providers allow the use of IRC bots. Thats fine, but when a lot of users have them running, it can slow down the machine and hog bandwidth. If you don't plan on using IRC bots, you are better off selecting a provider that doesnt allow IRc bots, because most likely you will have a faster inernet connection and less processes hogging the CPU.

Once you have selected a shell provider, created an account or need to connect before doing so, continue to the tutorial on connecting to your shell.
